I.Lase Cataract Surgery

I.Lase

I.Lase cataract surgery and refractive eye surgery clinic is a practice that can offer treatment and lenses to numerous eye conditions. it is run by Mr Mohammed Muhtaseb, FRCOphth. He is a specialist in all forms of cataract and refractive surgery and is also a cornea consultant. Consultations with Mr Muhtaseb are available from his clinics in Mumbles, Swansea and Wimpole Street, London.

Surgery

The I.Lase cataract surgery that is carried out by Mr Muhtaseb uses the latest methods and technology to produce excellent results for each patient. The operation involves making a small incision in the cornea and extracting the clouded lens, a new artificial lens is implanted in the eye to work as a permanent lens.

The cornea is around 12 mm in size; in older methods of cataract removal a cataract was removed whole this required a 12 mm incision which meant numerous stitches to repair the eye. Doing surgery this way meant that recovery could take up to 12 weeks, the new technique used by I.Lase means that patients can recovery in just a day. The incision made in just 3 mm and to remove the cataract ultrasound is used; the ultrasound breaks the cataract into small pieces to be removed by suction. The new lens that is implanted is made from a soft and flexible material such as silicone and is placed in to the eye folded; the type of lens implanted into the eye plays a huge part in the vision of the patient after surgery.

Lenses

Lenses used in cataract surgery are known as intraocular lenses (IOL), the standard kind of lens used in surgery is a monofocal lens. This kind of lens provides improved vision but only over longer distances meaning that vision for short distances will require glasses or contact lenses. Some people undergoing surgery wish to have lenses implanted so that the need for glasses is eradicated; I.Lase cataract surgery can provide numerous lenses to help improve vision over all distances.
These types of lens are known as multifocal lenses and come in different varieties, each offering excellent results.

  • The Acri.LISA lens: This lens provides excellent distance and near vision, the intermediate is fairly good but not at the standard of near vision.

  • The Rezoom lens: The lens will provide excellent vision over long and intermediate distances and also fairly good near vision.

  • The Rayner MFlex lens: This lens can come in two different strengths; one will provide excellent distance and near vision whilst the other provides first class vision over distance and intermediate.

The choice of lens will discussed fully at the consultation.
